Mountain, Ghost, Sunlight, Umbrella—
Unreal Images Flow in Time and Space for Hundreds of Years ,Dynamic experiment image,  15'09'',2022

 

Artist Statement

The title of this work, Mountain, Ghost, Sunlight, Umbrella, uses four nouns to form a series of narratives highlighted by a verb. The narratives are adapted from a true story: The story is about a little girl, who passed away because of leukemia, and the various events that ensue her death. The four stages are “In the Mountain Fog,” “A Ghostly Encounter,” “Bringing the Ghost Down the Mountain in Daylight,” and “The Ghost in an Umbrella,” which adopt abstract image narratives to portray the idea of a body-less spirit.


This work explores how animation technologies are connected with ghosts and illusions. In this case, “ghosts” refer to illusions created by visual afterimages. They linger among different temporal-spatial “nodes,” producing illusions and spiritual disturbances by playing on the inability of the “human eye” to catch up with the “eye of machine.” As early as 1896, the worldview informed by the techniques of stop motion and substitution splice created by Georges Méliès (1861-1938) already gave birth to many spectral and spectacular illusions. As of today, artists are using various technologies, including animation substitution, algorithm, and face swap, to transport the body of modern people into an illusory space-time more than a century ago—the past time of Méliès’s films.


Will the time be broken in the future? Will films no longer be used as proofs of temporal progression? Or, when the “past, present, and future” time are all represented at the same time point, will the manipulation and forgery of space-time become a popular maneuver in future crimes? The films left in the future will not be evidence anymore but an enshrouding fog of time. The future will be a world, in which immortals, substitutes, zombies, ghosts, and human bodies co-exist.

山鬼日傘-幻影時空的百年流轉 ,動態實驗影像, 15'09'',2022

作品〈山鬼日傘〉以四個名詞山、鬼、日、傘,去串接成一個動詞所彰顯的一連串敘事,敘事改編自一段真實故事­­:關於一位小女孩罹患血癌去世,所衍生的種種事跡;其中「山中的迷霧裡」、「遇鬼」、「日光下將鬼請下山」和「在傘裡的鬼」四個階段,以抽象敘事的方式做為影像引動出竅靈魂的概念。

本次作品談論動畫技術與鬼影、幻影間的關係,而那個「鬼」,指的是動畫中視覺殘像的錯覺,鬼穿梭在每個時間與空間的「結點」中,它藉由「肉眼」跟不上「機器之眼」而產生幻象及靈魂騷動,早在1896年喬治.梅里愛(Georges Méliès) 停抽格技術的世界觀中,就以此產生了許多鬼魅的奇觀幻影;到如今,藝術家以動畫替身、演算法和換臉等技術,將現代人的身體,置換在一個幻影時空的百年流轉-回到梅里愛的影像過去……。

未來的時間是否將被摔破,影像是否無法成為時間足跡的證明,又或是影像將時間的「過去、現在、未來」都再現於同一個時間點上的時候,空間和時間的捏造、偽造,是否也將成為未來犯罪的顯學;在未來遺留下的影像,將不再是證據,而是一團時間的迷霧,未來,將是不死之身、替身、喪屍、亡靈、肉身都同時存在的世界。
